ORGANIZATION SET UP:

The erstwhile Nagaland State's Weights & Measures Organization was established during 1968-69 comprised with 1 (one) Asstt. Controller, 3 (three) Inspector, and nominal supporting staff for the introduction of 'Metric System' to do away with the chaotic. Age-old heterogeneous systems of weights & measures then prevalent in the State. The organization was attached to the department of Industries & Commerce at the Secretariat level till its transfer to Food & Civil Supplies in 1974. Despite inadequate man power and other pre-requisite infrastructure, the agency has ever since adopted and been implementing the corresponding Central Acts/ Rules on Weights & Measures and Packaged Commodities in Nagaland. During August 1995, the subject was transferred and merged with Weights & Measures Department.

The newly integrated organization has been re-nomenclatured as the Department of Legal & Consumer Protection though the existing organizational set-up remain status quo ante-1995 (i.e. pre-amalgamation) as shown below:

Presently, the twin department is still clubbed with the Food & Civil Supplies Department at the Administrative Level, and the Secretary also functions as the Ex-Officio Controller of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection. The Department is headed by the Joint Controller as the Technical Head. He is assisted by 1 (One) Deputy Controller, 1 (One) Assistant Controller and 2 (Two) Inspector. At the District and field level, there are now 8 (Eight) Assistant Controllers and 11(Eleven) Inspectors, who constitutes the basis of Enforcement of the relevant laws on Weights & Measures, and also assist in the implementation of the Consumer Protection Acts & Rules.
